Ascender's COVID-19 Response

At Ascender, health and safety matter. here's our response to COVID-19.

At Ascender, we take the health and safety of our immediate and wider communities seriously. We’ve been following state and CDC guidelines throughout the COVID-19 crisis. Below, please see an overview of our response. Members have received additional detailed guidance.

Space access

Ascender remains open to members 24/7, so individual members and teams can schedule the in-person hours that work best for them.

As of 2021, we continue to limit the number of individuals that can use our smaller spaces, like conference rooms, for social distancing purposes.


We encourage everyone who is able to get vaccinated against COVID-19. For the latest news on the vaccine roll-out, visit the Allegheny County Health Department website.

For privacy reasons, we do not and will not require Ascender members to get the vaccine or ask them to inform us of their vaccination status.  Individuals are welcome to disclose their own vaccination status to others if they choose. 

In accordance with current CDC guidelines, all members, even those who have been vaccinated, must continue to wear masks in shared spaces.


Members are welcome to invite guests to the space for meetings or other collaborative in-person work. Guests will be asked to sign in and out for visits to Ascender, and provide contact information. All guest meeting and contact information will be kept confidential and will not be shared or utilized for any purpose other than in the case of necessary contact tracing during a COVID-19 outbreak.

Ascender uses a thermal temperature scanning system as a way to check for fevers before members or guests enter the space. All guests and members should follow the instructions on posted signage to have their temperature scanned before entering the workspace. If the system indicates that you have a fever, we ask that you return home and come back to the space only after all signs of fever have abated.

Cleaning and health practices

In addition to regular professional cleaning, all high-touch surfaces in the Ascender space are sanitized consistently with a CDC-approved cleaner during peak office hours. Soft furnishings are sanitized daily with a hospital-grade, CDC-approved cleaner. Hand sanitizer, soap, and personal protective equipment (PPE) are available for individual use during both peak and off-peak hours.

Members, staff, and guests are required to wear a mask in all shared spaces and to maintain social distance.

Our typical kitchen hospitality services have been paused, but we are providing access to the kitchen, disposable dishwater and utensils, and coffee and tea. Upon updated guidance from the state, we will consider reinstituting typical hospitality services.

We encourage everyone in the space to follow CDC guidelines for personal hygiene, including utilizing the provided PPE and hand sanitizer, regularly washing hands for at least 20 seconds, and staying home if you or any member of your household is experiencing flu-like symptoms.

We are up-to-date on state guidance regarding required measures should there be an outbreak amongst our staff or our membership, and are prepared with a plan to enact those measures if necessary.

Social distancing

Ascender has been following social distance protocols as established by the state of Pennsylvania. These guidelines suggest maintaining at least 6 feet of physical distance whenever possible, including while wearing a mask. Some of the ways we have encouraged social distancing in our space include:

  • Limitations on the number of people in small, shared spaces including elevator, restrooms, kitchen, and conference rooms
  • Encouraging member companies to stagger their team’s work and break times to allow for social distancing
  • Utilizing provided sneeze-guard barriers at desks where 6 feet of distance cannot be maintained
  • Reconfigured furniture in common areas
  • Utilizing virtual meetings and program delivery methods

community support

Entrepreneurial support has always been at the heart of Ascender’s mission. We have worked closely with the small business owners and entrepreneurs in our community to understand their needs and direct them towards resources, while continuing to facilitate a vibrant calendar of virtual programming including social activities and guest speakers.

We will continue to compile resources for all of Pittsburgh’s entrepreneurship community on our website and invite anyone who could benefit to look at our list of resources or get in touch.
